Helldivers 2 will soon require PlayStation accounts to run on PC

PlayStation Network accounts will soon be mandatory for Helldivers 2’s PC version

Arrowhead Games, the studio behind Helldivers 2, has confirmed that PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts will soon be mandatory for the PC version of their game. Previously, this account linking requirement was optional, but now the game’s so-called “grace period” will expire.

This means that a lot of PC gamers will soon need PSN accounts. All new Helldivers 2 players will need a PSN account on PC from May 6th. Existing players will need to log into their PSN accounts to play the game from May 30th, with account linking being mandatory from June 4th.

While Arrowhead are citing security reasons for this change, it is hard not to see the change as being a little ridiculous. After all, Helldivers 2 already works without needing PlayStation Network accounts. That said, if it makes the Helldivers 2 community a better one, it is hard to complain too much about this change.

Attention Helldivers,

Due to technical issues at the launch of HELLDIVERS 2, we allowed the linking requirements for Steam accounts to a PlayStation Network account to be temporarily optional. That grace period will now expire. See details below in this post.

Account linking plays a critical role in protecting our players and upholding the values of safety and security provided on PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games. This is our main way to protect players from griefing and abuse by enabling the banning of players that engage in that type of behaviour. It also allows those players that have been banned the right to appeal.

As such, as of May 6th, all new HELLDIVERS 2 players on Steam will be required to connect their Steam account to a PlayStation Network account. Current players on Steam will start to see the mandatory login from May 30th and will be required to have linked a Steam and PlayStation Network account by June 4th. We understand that while this may be an inconvenience to some of you, this step will help us to continue to build a community that you are all proud to be a part of.

Many thanks for your continued support of HELLDIVERS 2!

PlayStation Network support is coming to a lot of future PC games, not just Helldivers 2

When they revealed their PC system requirements for Ghost of Tsushima, Sony announced that the game would feature PC/PlayStation Cross-play, and PlayStation overlay integration. The game will require users to be signed into a PlayStation Network account to use these features, enabling PSN chat functionality, PSN Trophies, and more.
