Fake “1080 PRO” M.2 NVMe SSDs are being sold online

Fake “1080 PRO” SSD claims 15,800 MB/s speeds

There is no shortage of fake PC hardware online. PC components that are being sold at prices that are too low to be legitimate, or with product that are made to look like more premium. Today, we have the (not Samsung) 1080 PRO SSD, a drive that has been listed with a 15,800 MB/s read speeds over at Ali Express.

For £22.63, this SSD promises cutting-edge performance and 4TB of storage capacity. Sadly, we do not live in a world where an SSD of this size and speeds are available for so little. This SSD is a fake. This SSD was made to look like Samsung SSDs like the 990 PRO (review here).

For science, the folks over at QuazarZone have bought and tested one of these fake 1080 PRO SSDs. To put it bluntly, it did not work as advertised. The drive ran incredibly slowly, and often ran slower than a hard disk drive. The drive was also not 4TB as advertised. These results are to be expected from a product that is clearly fake. Even so, props to QuazarZone for buying this drive and confirming its inauthenticity.

While I would love to see Samsung launch a 1080 PRO SSD, this drive ain’t it. Today, Samsung’s flagship SSD is the 990 PRO. Yes, Samsung’s fastest SSD is a PCIe 4.0 drive, and the company has shown now signs of releasing a high-end PCIe 5.0 SSD to the market. Well, at least not yet.

Consumers should always be aware that fake products are being sold online, and take measures to avoid such products. You can’t buy a 4TB SSD for less than £25.
