Resident Evil 2 (2019) – An Introduction

The original Resident Evil 2 released back in 1998 on the original PlayStation, finding enough success on the platform to receive an enhanced “Dual Shock” version on its original platform as well as ports to other consoles such as the Nintendo 64, the SEGA Dreamcast and Gamecube. 

A lot has changed in 20 years, so much so that a simple remake wouldn’t do the series justice. Yes, you could rebuild the original game and crank the graphics to 11, but Capcom thought that today’s gamers deserved better. 

Resident Evil 2 (2019) is not a Crash Bandicoot N’Sane Trilogy (Performance Review Link) kind of remake. This is a recreation of the game that fully reforges the title’s story with modern gameplay, up-to-date graphics and subtle story changes that allow the game to feel fresh to both series newcomers and veterans alike. 

On the software-side Capcom has built Resident Evil 2 on their new RE Engine, which is also known as the “Reach to the Moon” engine, utilising modern rendering techniques to deliver excellent graphics while maintaining solid performance on both console and PC hardware. This engine was first used in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (Performance Review Here) and is being used to create Devil May Cry 5, which released later this year. 

On PC, Resident Evil 2 gives us a lot to talk about, from the game’s utilisation of DirectX 12 to the title’s implementation of AMD-specific features such as Shader Intrinsics, Rapid Packed Math and FP16 compute. We will also have a chat about which settings players should enable to disable to achieve the best performance on your PC hardware.
