.ini hacks - Super Sampling and framerate unlocking
Dragon Quest XI's graphical options menu is lacklustre, offering a minimal assortment of graphical options to tinker with. Beyond that, the graphical options that are available range from strangely implemented to downright unusable, leaving options menu junkies with a bad taste in their mouth.
Thankfully, Dragon Quest XI, like all good Unreal Engine games, has a few adjustable .ini files, allowing PC players to adjust several aspects of the game from the game's maximum framerate, to the ability to increase the game's resolution scaling (screen percentage) option to values that are over 100%.
We may investigate more hidden graphical options at a later date, especially if they can enable increased performance levels with a minimal reduction in graphical detail.
Unlocking Dragon Quest's Framerate
To unlock Dragon Quest XI's framerate, players must navigate to the location of the game's configuration files.
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\DRAGON QUEST XI\Saved\SaveGames\
Once there, open GameUserSettings.ini. When inside this file find FrameRateLimit=60.000000 and change 60.000000 to your desired maximum framerate.
Enabling Resolution Scales of over 100% (Super Sampling)
Navigate to Dragon Quest XI's configuration files (see above). Open GameUserSettings.ini and find ScreenPercentage=100.000000. Change 100.000000 to your desired value (200 for a 200% resolution scale).
Below we have screenshots which compare a 100% Screen Percentage value to the same scene with a 200% Screen Percentage value. In the 200% screenshot, we can see that aliasing is significantly decreased and that several details within the scene appear sharper, including the wood that is embedded into the ground and the facial features of the priest.
