MSI RX 480 and GTX 1060 Gaming X Review

MSI RX 480 and GTX 1060 Gaming X Review

Introduction

We have seen a few variants of the two cards in the most popular section of both the AMD and nVidia ranges lately. Both the RX 480 and GTX 1060 provide fantastic value for money and, as is always the case with this important area of the market there is very little to choose between the manufacturers to the average gamer. It all comes down to clock speed and affordability, and if you can get a great looking card too then all the better.

MSI have been putting out fantastic looking cards for as long as we can remember, and by introducing the latest version of their Twin Frozr cooler to both the GTX 1060 and RX 480 and then giving them a big factory overclock we end up with the models we have on test today, both part of the Gaming X range.

The Gaming X series are another step on from the regular Gaming range from MSI, and as you can see from the image at the top of this review it’s extremely difficult to tell the two cards apart. Which is great news as we think the Twin Frozr VI is a fantastic looking cooler, and previous tests have shown it to have excellent cooling capabilities to go with those looks.

Technical Specifications

This harmony between the two cards stretches beyond the mere aesthetics. Both have the MSI multi-mode switch that puts you into either Silent, Gaming or OC modes depending upon your intended usage. Both have the full compliment of display outputs and the bigger of the two GDDR5 sizes. There is even only a couple of millimetres difference in size. Brothers from a separate mother.
