MSI GTX980Ti Gaming 6G Review

MSI GTX980Ti Gaming 6G Review

In our introduction we mentioned how, unless you've been living beneath a rock, you had to know what we held in our grubby hands and thus what today's review would reveal. It should come to the surprise of precisely nobody that what we envisaged would come to pass, did so.

The GTX980Ti is unquestionably the graphics card on the market at the moment if you require the fastest frame-rates. The GTX980 is hardly chopped liver and yet the gurus at nVidia managed to squeeze even more performance from the Maxwell GPU, and did so without compromising either the power draw nor the usability. Throw any game you like at it, and do so in nearly any resolution, and it just shrugs its shoulders and gets on with the job of delivering exceptional image quality and searing smoothness. It would be nearly impossible to produce a bad one, such is the underlying quality of the foundation.

MSI have taken this monumentally good GPU and garnished it with their outstanding Twin Frozr V cooler. We've loved the Twin Frozr since we first saw it on the 2xx series GTX cards, and even revision has only improved its cooling capabilities and refined its looks and noise levels. We saw it on the R9 390X and it kept temperatures firmly under control without deafening us, and here on the GTX980Ti that trend continues. It looks spectacular with incredible attention to detail from the obvious fans on the front to the subtle dragon on the backplate. Performance is perfect with plenty of headroom for overclocking without resorting to fast, and therefore loud, fans to achieve it.

The combination of blistering Maxwell architecture and outstanding power delivery and cooling capacity means that the GTX980Ti Gaming 6G is the finest single card we've ever tested here at OC3D Towers. Surpassing even the glorious GTX Titan X in our affections and that statement alone even though its not in our graphs means it leaves the Fury X totally in the shade. It's the type of hardware our Gold Award was designed for. Run to your nearest hardware emporium immediately and procure yourself one and be sure you've bought one of the finest, fastest GPU's on the planet.

Nice review - MSI always make good cards, been using them for years. Their cooler always seems to be progressing in the right direction.Quote

Nice review, although we need more types of 980 Ti. For me the most outrageous of not-reviewed-yet is the Zotac AMP! Extreme with it's 1253MHz out of the box core clock.

Either that or the KFA2 HOF LN2 Edition, which is seriously tempting me (really depends on a waterblock being made for it, EK plz).Quote
