The MSI Tomahawk range has quickly established itself as the alternative to their Gaming range. Largely, we have to admit, on aesthetic grounds more than raw performance or cost reasons. What can be a better antithesis to the world of black motherboards than an all-white number?
With the release of the X299 chipset MSI have returned to their design team and returned with the Tomahawk Arctic. Perfect for those of you who have a penchant for the white PCB, especially given the prevalence of RGB lighting these days. We're just having an overview today so let's get down to the specifications before we show you it in all its glory on the next page.
It is ridiculous how much technology is crammed into the X299 chipset. No matter how often we write these bits of fluff we never quite get used to the sheer volume of things we get to play with. Quad channel DDR4 that can be clocked up to 4133MHz or a whopping 4500MHz if you only run dual channel. Yes sir. Should you have recently discovered that you've lost a rich uncle then you'll be pleased to note that the Arctic supports up to 128 GB of DDR4. More memory than most of our SSDs? If you insist. On the subject of storage the Tomahawk Arctic has eight SATA ports, dual M.2 and a U.2 for those of you with fancy storage solutions. Add to this four PCI Express slots and umpteen USB ports - mostly of the 3.1 type - and there is much to entice you.
