Intel Xeon E5-2697v2 Review

Folding @ Home

The current version of [email protected] doesn't fully support the latest Xeon's and that's patently obvious here with a setup that has potential for enormous numbers and yet doesn't deliver.

Edit - Since initial testing and playing around for many hours due to the V7 client not allowing us to set more than 32 threads (out of our possible 48) we ended up managing to get the SMP client on GPU tracker loading all of our glorious 48 threads up to 100% and giving us PPD between 120,000 and 140,000. This is still much lower than we expected so we may revisit this if we can get it all running again on Linux where a speculated 500,000 to 600,000 PPD could be hiding. If this amount of PPD is correct we have a strange feeling the pair of 2687's and the other pair of 2660 octocore Xeons we still have may find some use!

My dangly bits tingled during the Cinebench run
Highest score i've had on my 2500k is about 7.9 and that took a good 30secs, maybe more to complete the render test.

I would love to have two of these Xeons but 1. I can't afford them and 2. I have no use for them anyway, so it would be a waste.
I still want them though!! Quote

I would love to see you guys putting Ubuntu on this rig and running The Phoronix Test Suite. Get all of those cores up and running. Running a desktop OS on this rig may be selling it short.

Thinking about it the test suite is something you guys might want to look into as it can running on Windows and automates benchmarks and might become a tool that could be used across the board.Quote

I'm a virtualisation consultant and we generally only buy Xeons, and while these are a 'headline' product for Intel very few will be sold simply because their $/£-per-core cost is disproportionately high compared to the ten-core E5-2670 v2 or E5-2680 v2. That said it's always nice to see a company pushing the envelope and of course in about five years our phones will have many cores Quote

I love these overkill3D videos/reviews, so much power, so little reason for almost anyone to buy.

A good watch and read all the same.Quote
