At the beginning of the year the Radeon's appeared and stunned us with how far AMD had pushed their performance. They proved themselves as true contenders for the gaming crown. Then nVidia unleashed the Maxwell GPUs with monster frame munching capabilities, and at very competitive pricing.
It would be impossible to have to pick a GPU winner and come away with anything other than a GTX980. All the power of the GTX780Ti, but with reduced power consumption and thus much quieter performance too. Everything about it is quality and our favourite, although they're all brilliant, is the ASUS Strix.
When it comes to high performance offerings the MSI range has always been fantastic, and none more so than the Lightning models. Their R9 290X Lightning rocked up with some rapid clocks 'out of the box' and the capability to push into stratospheric numbers. A particular highlight was the GDDR5 which went as quickly as anything we've seen, and even the looks were spot on.
The most recent card in our roundup is definitely something that will appeal to everyone with a desire for performance that doesn't break the bank. We were tempted to go with a GTX750Ti, but in the end the Galax GTX970 EX OC Black Edition was the card that won our hearts. Anyone who has been fortunate enough to spend some time with a GTX970 knows what an amazing GPU it is, and the EX OC Black makes the very most of it.
