Yesterday's attack on twitter down to one person
Yesterday, micro blogging website - twitter, was the target of a denial of service (DOS) attack. This brought the site to a halt and meant that it's millions of users could not access it for around 12 hours. The reason behind the attack was not known at the time, although now it has been revealed that the attack was intended to 'silence' a single blogger based in Georgia. The attack also affected Facebook, LiveJournal, Youtube and Blogger.
Facebook's chief security officer, Max Kelly, said that the Georgian blogger ‘Cyxymu' was the intended target of the attack. "It was a simultaneous attack across a number of properties targeting him to keep his voice from being heard," Kelly told CNET.
"The people who are coordinating this attack, the criminals, are definitely determined and using a lot of resources. If they're asking our infrastructure to generate hundreds of pages a second, that's a lot of pages our users can't see."
All sites are now fully functional again, but nobody knows what will happen next.
