Toshiba announce 128GB Solid State Drive Page: 1
Toshiba have announced they are entering the SSD market with new drives ranging from 32 to 128GB.
Today the company confirmed it will launch nine SSDs ranging from 32GB to 128GB in 3.5in desktop and both 1.8in and 2.5in notebook friendly formats. The entire range will use SATA II (3Gbps) interfaces to reach potential 100MBps read and 40MBps write speeds. Power requirements are just 5V (3.3V in 1.8in) and an incredible operating life of 1,000,000 hours is predicted.
As for release time frames, Toshiba will be showcasing the drives at CES in January with plans to have 3.5in samples in February, beginning mass production in March. The 1.8in and 2.5in variants will sample in April and begin mass production in May. Pricing at this stage remains a long way off.
Of course an interesting offshoot of this story is that Toshiba and SanDisk both share ownership of the Yokkaichi SSD Japanese production plant. So expect SanDisk to make a similar announcement any minute.
