AMD Barcelona Processors performance may live up to hype

Since the release of Intel's Core 2 Duo line of processors, AMD has been fighting an uphill battle to stay competitive in the processor market. AMD's answer to the Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad, is the AMD Barcelona. In past tests it seemed that AMD's new processors may still fall short of Intel's current offering; however, new benchmarks have come out that may refute that.

These new benchmarks are based on the AMD Opteron 2356 (Barcelona) @ 2.3Ghz against the Intel Xeon 5355 (Clovertown) @ 2.66Ghz. In Floating Point and Integer based test, Barcelona shined out performing the higher clocked Clovertown by 21% in the SPECint test and a massive 50% performance increase in floating point.

These are just preliminary benchmarks of Barcelona and no one will be sure of real world performance until the release slated for August of this year 2007. Recently, AMD has not competed so well with Intel after the Core 2 Duo release, so for the sake of market competition one would hope that AMD will execute in the end.
