Nintendo discontinues their "New 3DS" console

Nintendo has announced that they are discontinuing their "New 3DS" console, ceasing the production of the console in favour of their 2DS, 2DS XL and 3DS XL hardware.

This will affect the EU and Japan most, with the US only ever selling this variant with limited/special edition console bundles. This variant of the 3DS offered several upgrades over the original 3DS, with more RAM, more shoulder buttons and a second analogue stick. The 3DS did the whole mid-generation console refresh long before the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.

With the recent release of the 2DS XL Nintendo has shown that they are not done with the 3DS, though they are clearly done with its 3D features. Both Pokemon Sun/Moon and Super Mario Maker only play in 2D mode, deciding to waste none of the console's power on the underused 3D feature.

With the release of the Nintendo Switch, many expected the 3DS to be retired completely, but Nintendo is clearly still hoping that there is still some more life in their affordable handheld offering, with several high profile games still coming to the console. These include Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon and Metroid: Samus Returns.

This leaves three versions of the 3DS still on the market, the 2DS, 2DS XL and New 3DS XL, which should be enough to satisfy consumers for now.
