Land Rover has created a tough smartphone for outdoor use

The big problem with today's smartphones is that they aren't very durable, making them unsuitable for a range of outdoor activities without a few extra layers of protection. Land Rover plans to change with this the introduction of their Explore smartphone, which they claim is the "toughest phone in the world" and is "built to work in places other phones can't reach".

This mobile phone is designed to be resistant to water, humidity, extreme temperatures and more, with a factory fitted screen protector, water resistance up to a depth of 1.8m (including salt water) and is capable of withstanding drops of 1.8 metres. The design has also been given an IP68 rating for water and dist resistance.

The Explore is currently based on Android Nougat, with an Oreo update in the works, featuring a 10-core 2.6GHz 64-bit Helio X27 chipset with dual sim functionality. The handset will also feature 4GB of RAM and offer 64GB of onboard storage, with microSD connectivity for additional expandability.

Below are the specifications of the phone, though the explore is designed with compatibility with "add-on packs" in mind to offer additional protection and functions. The first is the "Battery Pack" which adds an extra 4.375mAh of battery capacity. The "Bike Pack" which acts as a handlebar mounting kit with tilt and swivel functions. Finally the "Adventure Pack" which offers a 3600mAh battery, an improved 25 x 25mm ceramic patch GPS antenna and a stainless steel carabiner/canvas strap.

All of these packs are 1.8m drop resistant and come with the same IP68 accreditation as the phone.

Landy, so nah... now if Subaru produced a 'phone I'd be confident it would do what it say's on the tin. Quote

Or you could just buy any phone and an otterbox.Quote

I agree, due to my various prejudices I would be far more likely to consider a Subbie over a Landy. However, a Otterbox doesn't give you IP67 or IP68 qualification, internal suspension, and does become loose and sloppy with wear, as well as having a cheap and easily marred display protector. Plugging anything in through an Otter is also frustrating, and at times impossible. So, of course I am required to keep an Otter on my work phone. SMH.Quote
