Today, Intel revealed its Tiger Lake series of mobile processors, and with it, Intel has unveiled its new Evo platform brand, which is designed to designate laptops which stand amongst the best that Intel can offer.

The Evo brand is a continuation of Intel's Project Athena, an initiative where Intel has worked with OEMs to co-engineer thin-and-light laptops to enable the best possible user experiences.

To qualify for Intel's Evo branding, laptops must pass Intel's certifications process and meet Intel's second edition Project Athena specification. To pass Intel's testing notebooks must exceed the company's responsiveness requirements, meet certain battery life requirements under specific workloads, and support features such as fast charging, Thunderbolt 4 and WiFi 6.

With Tiger Lake, Intel's promises to deliver laptop users significant boosts to CPU and graphics performance over their existing Ice Lake offerings. Tiger Lake also brings with it integrated support for Thunderbolt 4, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5. While these features are integrated at a silicon level, they are not mandatory for all Tiger Lake laptops.

Intel's Evo branded platforms are required to feature these integrated Tiger Lake features, and offer users at least 8GB dual-channel memory, at least 256GB of NVMe/PCIe SSD storage, and "Instant Wake" performance. The image below highlights many of the required features of Intel's Tiger Lake platforms.

Intel's Evo notebooks must wake up from its sleep mode in less than a second, and charge fast enough to deliver 4 hours of battery life within 30 minutes.

Beyond feature requirements, Intel's Evo platform must also sit within the 12-inch to 15.x-inch form factor with FHD+ Touch Displays, Narrow Bezels, and 15mm or thinner designs.

Intel's Evo branded systems must offer users nine or more house of "real-world battery life", offer users a Full HD or higher resolution screen and feature a premium webcam/display/audio combination.

With Intel's Evo products, the company promises to deliver purchasers a high quality user experience. Evo branding Intel's seal of approval, a sign that a laptop/notebook will meet Intel's highest quality standards.

This fact alone will make Intel's Evo products desirable over other Intel-powered notebooks, though it is worth noting that Evo products will be limited exclusively to the world of low-power, small form factor notebooks.

These specs make sense in a work / enterprise environment. I have a HP Zbook that admittedly is a couple of generations behind but it hits the goldilocks spot for me in weight, performance, endurance. I7, 16GB, 500GB NVMe, FHD touch 14" Screen, WIFI 5 and 8hrs battery, throw in a couple of USB 3A's and a Type C / Thunderbolt 3 port and its a nice package. Looking at these EVO specs and it's a common sense upgrade of all the various bits that have surfaced in the last few years.Quote
