Toshiba releases Helium-sealed MN07 12TB and 14TB hard drives for NAS platforms

Toshiba has officially announced their new MN07 series of 3.5-inch hard drives, which utilise helium sealed technology to offer increased capacities and greater levels of power efficiency than traditional air-filled drives.

The MN07 series of drives are designed for NAS applianced with support for eight or more drive bays, offering users vibration compensation technology and 24/7 operability.

14TB models feature Toshiba's 9-disk platter configuration, which is enabled by the drive's use of a sealed enclosure which is filled with helium. This design change reduced the internal forces inside the drive, allowing platters to be placed closer together, while also preventing fluctuation of external air pressure and humidity from impacting the drive's internals. This design change should enable helium-filled drives to offer increased longevity when comapred to their air-filled counterparts.

Regarding power efficiency, Toshiba's MN07 drives offer a 55% increase in power efficiency, which is measured in Wattage/TB of storage, when compared to last-generation air-filled 10TB 7,200 RPM hard drives.  New MN07 series drives will operate at speeds of 7,200 RPM and offer a 256MB cache buffer.

As NAS-grade HDD offerings, it is likely that Toshiba's new MN07 series HDDs will be released at retail before the end of the year as standalone products, though the product is likely to be sold to major NAS providers first. Toshiba has started sampling these drives to customers, though none of these clients have been named officially.
