Samsung Reveals 1TB eUFS Storage Chip for Smartphones

Samsung is one of the world leaders when it comes to NAND-based storage, with their 970 series SSDs, sitting amongst the upper echelon of PC-grade solid state storage solutions.  

Now, Samsung's storage prowess is bringing more of their PC-grade performance into the compact smartphone market, announcing today that they have started mass producing the industry's first 1TB eUFS 2.1 storage solution. This memory chip will be used to create future high-end smartphones, bringing the company's mobile devices into the 1TB era. 

Samsung believes that this new memory solution will enable future mobile devices to deliver more notebook-like performance, with their latest 1TB euFS 2.1 offering enabling 1,000 MB/s sequential writes and 58,000 Random Read IOPS. Performance-wise, this eUFS storage device can offer sequential read speeds that are almost double that of mainstream SATA SSDs, which is an astounding achievement for a mobile-grade storage medium. 

To create this new SSD, Samsung uses 16 stacked layers of their latest 512Gb fifth generation 3D V-NAND, offering 1TB of storage space. In 2019, Samsung plans to expand their Pyeongtaek plant in Korea in the first half of 2019, a change which will help Samsung meet the market demand for their ultra-high-end eUFS chips.

Samsung provided the following speed comparison chart to showcase the high-end performance of their latest eUFS storage chips, showcasing a 38% increase in random read speeds over 2017's 512GB eUFS drive and an incredible performance lead over the company's early eUFS devices and MicroSD cards. 

Samsung claims that their new 1TB eUFS storage device will allow smartphone enthusiasts to record 260 10-minute 4K UHD videos without running out of storage space.

With Samsung announcing a 1TB storage chip for smartphones, it is highly probable that the company will offer 1TB storage options with their next-generation of Galaxy smartphones, a change which will likely see high-end models receive a significant price increase.

Really nice to see this. Even though I barely even have my 256GB phone at even 25% full, I personally can't see myself ever needing this much space on my smartphone. But the availability of it is really nice though.

Plus the following quote is just insane really:

AFAIK Apple are still Samsung's biggest customer and Samsung are still Apples biggest supplier, the phone division has separate targets & financials to the semiconductor & IC design portions & operate without much internal conflict, so yeah chances are if Samsung make the best type of something Apple will still use it, like with the OLEDs on the iPhone X devices, and NAND flash certainly seems to be one of those areas.Quote

True, but are/do they have to the sam extent, ie storage space and performance wise, as like Samsung has gotten with this for example though?...Quote

Flash storage speed is one area Apple have generally been ahead of the rest with phones, they had SSD tier storage years before Android which was part of the reason older Android phones often felt a little sluggier on app loads and stuff, they currently use Toshiba but it's the memory controller where they gain the advantage, however this changes things abit.Quote
