Samsung may soon be releasing 970 and 980 series NVMe SSDs

Tom's Hardware has gotten an early glimpse of Samsung's UNH Interoperability laboratory list and has discovered listings that seem to indicate that both a 970 series and a 980 series NVMe SSDs are set to release later this year or in early 2018.

These two products will likely replace Samsung's already popular 960 Pro and 960 Evo series SSDs, potentially offering higher storage densities and higher levels of performance thanks to Samsung's latest NAND innovations.

Samsung already offers some of the fastest NVMe SSDs on the market, especially in the highly sought after M.2 form factor, making every step forward for the company a further step into the performance lead in many regards. Right now Samsung is the undisputed king of the SSD market, at least in terms of performance.

At this time it is unknown what type of NAND these new SSDs will be using, though it is expected to be Samsung's latest 64-layer TLC V-NAND, which offers power, speed and latency improvements when compared to Samsung's last generation V-NAND.

Samsung may soon be releasing 970 and 980 series NVMe SSDs

These new SSDs are expected to release in small volumes at the end of 2017 and release in higher volumes at the start of 2018.

I think they should focus on making SSDs cheaper, rather than releasing new onesQuote
