Intel's Optane/XPoint memory is an impressive technology, offering performance levels which sit somewhere between NAND and DRAM to deliver non-volatile storage with extremely high-performance levels, particularly at low queue depths.

Over the weekend, new Optane-based SSDs have appeared on the US retailer Newegg under the 905P series name, suggesting that these new models are refined versions of the company's existing 900P series with a more rugged gamer-like aesthetic.

Looking at the PCIe add-in card version of the 905P, we can see what appears to be LEDs on the edge of the SSD's cooling solutions, with a U.2 2.5-inch version which has a bumpier enclosure than its 900P counterpart.

At this time it is unknown what has changed with Intel's new 905P series of Optane SSDs, whether they offer higher performance levels, a new controller, enhanced durability or some other hardware improvements. From the limited information that is available online, the idle power consumption of the unit has increased from 5W on the 900P to 7W on the 905P with an increase in operating temperature range from 0-75 degrees to 0-85 degrees.

At this time the main sticking point with Optane is its high pricing when compared to standard NAND memory, making standard SSDs much more viable from a price/GB standpoint. Optane has also only offered limited capacities in the standard M.2 form factor, maxing out at 118Gb at the time of writing, which is simply too small for most potential users to see as worthwhile.
