When Intel first announced their new XPoint memory type, they made some lofty claims. Intel stated that they have bridged the gap between DRAM and NAND, offering non-volatile storage (doesn't wipe data during power loss) and offers speed and latency characteristics that are closer to DRAM than it was to NAND.   

  
Now Intel has released their new XPoint NAND under the Optane brand, offering storage latencies that are up to 60x less latent than their older P3700 SSDs under heavy workloads.   

Intel have now released their PCIe P4800X today in limited quantities, with plans to release more SSD models in both U.2 and PCIe form factors later in the year.

Intel plans to offer these SSDs with capacities of up to 1.5TB, which is an insane amount of memory when you consider how it can be used. 

Where Intel's new XPoint memory excels is in low queue depths, with Intel listing this SSD's specification at a queue depth of 16, when most competing SSDs provide data for queue depths of 32. Intel's new XPoint memory offers higher speeds at lower queue depths than traditional SSDs, allowing this SSD to maximise its speeds under a wider range of workloads.

One of this SSD's intended use cases for the P4800X is as a DRAM extension, allowing this SSD's storage to be used as system memory without much performance degradation compared to a large frame buffer.  

While this SSD has a monstrous price of $1520 for 375GB, this price is super low considering this drive's usability as a DRAM extension, which will be very useful for those that want inexpensive servers/workstations that can use large datasets.

With a price of $1520 this SSD is clearly not aimed at the consumer market, though this memory does have the potential to be used in more affordable systems at lower capacities.

I'd have a question. The interface is still PCIE-3 and only 4 lanes at max, I must that in the photo they seem only 2 times, so how will it be faster than an NVME drive, when this one almost saturates the bandwith?Quote

As you suggest with the interfaces the same the maximum sequential rates will be similar but where this leaps ahead is the latency on random IO, and the write-wear is pretty good too.Quote

A premium price for that black pcb though

Nothing so far has tempted me to upgrade my trusty Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SATA3 drive... I do have a NVMe PCI 3.0 boot drive though, but it doesn't feel faster to me.Quote
