ASUS launches their FX external HDD with Aura Sync

ASUS has officially revealed their new FX series of external hard drives, offering capacities of 1TB and 2TB as well as full Aura Sync compatibility. Yes, ASUS put RGB LEDs on an external hard drive.

The drive itself is nothing out of the ordinary, offering 5Gbps of USB 3.1 (Gen 1) connectivity to ensure that the drive's full transfer speeds are accessible. The primary differentiator between ASUS' FX drives and competing offerings is ASUS' unique aesthetics and the unit's bundled software.

On the hardware side, ASUS offers 256-bit AES encryption and data compression and makes use of an ASMedia 1153E controller to help maximise transfer speeds. Regardless, this drive will not operate outside of the realms of 2.5-inch mechanical hard drives. The FX EHD isn't an external SSD.

ASUS has bundled this drive with software that will allow users to back up their PCs, mobile data, social media and even cloud storage, though ASUS' FX HDD webpage fails to specify exactly what this software is and who created it.

ASUS FX External Hard Drive is the world's first 2.5” HDD with Aura Sync lighting, USB 3.1 Gen1 data transmission speed, 256-bit AES encryption, and a capacity of either 1 TB or 2 TB for an extreme reliable backup solution. Featuring a futuristic design and exclusive Aura Sync LED lighting, ASUS FX gives any gaming setup a dashing look.

At this time, ASUS has not provided us with a firm release date for their FX series of external hard drives, or their MSRP for the UK, US or European markets.

Asus is losing my respect FAST. They still make the best motherboards out there without question IMO, but all this extra crap needs to stop. They're going the same route as Corsair, launching tons of cheap products made of low-grade Chinesium. Who the hell needs RGB sync'ing on all the crap?!?!Quote

This is them trying to diversify into new markets and I don't feel they can bring anything unique. If anything this is just diluting their brand image.Quote

Well, how does one innovate in the external hard drive market? Also remember that this is an ASUS product, not ROG.

ASUS is an extremely diverse company, one of the largest in the industry, so trying to make a little bit of everything under their brand name is to be expected. We can see the same things with Razer, Corsair and some of the other big brands.Quote
