YouTube Premium and Music launch in 17 countries

Google has officially launched YouTube Premium and YouTube Music across 17 countries, killing off the YouTube Red brand. This is the first time that YouTube's premium services will be available within European countries, offering European customers an ad-free experience for the first time.

YouTube Premium will be available in the following countries, Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.

In the UK, YouTube Premium will cost £11.99 per month and offer prospective purchasers a 3-month free trial, offering ad-free and offline video playback as well as the ability to play videos in the background, even when other apps are open on specific operating systems. YouTube Premium Music is also offered using this service as well as access to YouTube Original content. Google's Play Music service is also provided as part of YouTube Premium subscription.

With the launch of this service, YouTube's Music website has now gone live, alongside an android app for the service.

European YouTube users can now access an ad-free YouTube experience without ad-blocking, ensuring that their favourite content creators can get paid for their work without the need to watch YouTube-provided advertisements, while also allowing YouTube to compete with existing Music platforms like Spotify.

The only problem with YouTube Premium is that a significant portion of its potential user base may only desire the service's add-free YouTube functionality, something which most people won't consider worth £11.99 per month, £4 more per month than a standard Netflix subscription.

As much as I want ad-free YouTube, £11.99 is too much for me. I wish I could jettison the music bit and cut it down to £7.99 or something more palatable.Quote

Adblocking will block about 4/10 of the ads in my experience atleast. Then again I DO use the music portion of Google Play Music (which gives me Youtube Premium for free).

I have the family one and have been using that with 2 other friends so we all benefit from it. They all give me $10 a month via google pay so I am actually making my money back Quote
