Windows 10 has been easily the most popular OS release of recent years, receiving many positive reviews across the web and being quickly adopted by many users due to it being a free upgrade and simply a great improvement over Windows 8 in terms of usability.

The website Statcounter now says that Windows 10 now accounts for 5% of the PC market, with over 53 million installs and a peak install rate of around 1500 machines per second. This places Windows 10 as the most popular Windows release by a long way, biting at the heels of Apple's latest OS, OS X 10.10.

Microsoft's tactic of giving away free Windows 10 upgrades to Windows 7 and 8.1 users is certainly benefiting Microsoft greatly, as this large userbase will be a great platform on which to build a more successful Windows App Store and create a more unified platform.
