Stardock reconfirms plans to add HDR and Vulkan support to Star Control: Origins

Before the launch of Star Control: Origins, Stardock revealed plans to implement support for some of today’s most advanced graphics and display technologies into the title, albeit in the form of post-release updates.

As part of their drive to improve Star Control: Origins, Stardock plans to update the game to natively support HDR, while also updating their rendering pipeline to support modern graphical APIs. Stardock has already confirmed that Star Control: Origins will support the Vulkan API as well as bespoke support AMD’s FreeSync 2 HDR technology.

In an update this morning, Stardock’s President and CEO Brad Wardell confirmed that “We’re updating Star Control to support HDR monitors natively” and that it “Looks pretty amazing”. As a space-based game, Star Control: Origins will benefit greatly from well implemented HDR support, given the contrast between the deep blackness of space and bright and flashy lights provided by enemy ships, their weapons and distant stars.

Recently, Brad Wardell commented that “We have Vulkan and DirectX12 crazy stuff coming too” in response to a recent OC3D article, suggesting that Stardock’s API plans for Star Control: Origins extend to both DirectX 12 and Vulkan, both of which should offer performance benefits over today’s DirectX 11 version of the game.

Since the game’s launch, Star Control: Origins has already received several major updates, adding new quests, performance/gameplay optimisations and support for modding to add seemingly infinite amounts of player-made story content. Star Control: Origins will continue to evolve in the coming months, as both Stardock and the game’s fanbase create new content with official patches/updates and mods respectively.
