RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 has been pulled from digital storefronts without any explanation from Atari, the game's distributor. At this time it is unknown why the game has been removed from digital retailers, though it is possible that it has something to do with Frontier Development's lawsuit against Atari over the royalties for the title, though this has not been confirmed.

In a statement to Eurogamer, the digital games retailer GOG has stated that this removal is "due to expiring licensing rights" and that the company has plans to talk to the game's "new distribution rights holders" to bring the game back to their storefront. Below is GOG's statement in full.

Due to expiring licensing rights, we were asked to remove the product from our catalog for the time being. We'll be in talks with new distribution rights holders to hopefully bring the game back as soon as possible.

RollerCoaster Tycoon is owned by Chris Sawyer, who licenses the series to Atari, allowing them to create and market new entries into the series. Last summer, Sawyer signed a three-year license extension agreement (link) with Atari, giving them the rights to the series until 2022, which means that the franchise remains firmly under Atari's control. This agreement explains why other RollerCoaster Tycoon series games remain available for sale at retailers.

When contacted by Eurogamer, Frontier developments refused to comment on the removal of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 from sale on Steam and GOG.

RollerCoaster Tycoon Steam Store page remains online, though the title currently lacks a purchase button, preventing users from purchasing the PC gaming classic. At this time it is unknown whether or not the game will return to Steam.

Surprised people would still be buying RCT 3 considering how dated it is and Planet Coaster exists.

What's more worrying is that Chris signed another deal with Atari after the total mess that is RCT World. Unless he's just banking on the micro transactions from the mobile games which is a damn fine way to butcher the franchiseQuote
