Ludicrously large Earth map mod comes to Civ VI

Gedemon's Ludicrously large Earth map has come to Civilization VI, bringing a 230x115 hex map to the game with geographically accurate start locations for most civilizations. This mod will also bring several popular Earth maps to the game, like Genghis Kai's GEM, NiRv4n4's Europe map as well as Gedemon's Giant Earth map.

This mod will also allow up to 50 Civilizations to play against each other at once, but only on Gidemon's Giant and Ludicrous Earth Maps, with the modder already successfully running a 32 Civ game for over 14 hours using his Ludicrous Earth map without crashing. Below is a feature list for Gedemon's Yet not Another Maps Pack for Civilization 6.

  • Giant map size (180x94) for all map script
  • Ludicrous Map Size (230x115) for all map script
  • Allows to set more than 50 Civilizations at those two sizes
  • A conversion of Genghis Kai's GEM (Hormigas version)
  • A conversion of NiRv4n4's Europe(Hormigas version)
  • A conversion of Greatest Earth Map by djvandyke
  • Culturally Linked Start Locations for all maps
  • True Starting Locations for some maps and Civilization (to be completed)
  • Add Ethnicity entries for City States and the forgotten Aztec.

This mod/map pack is in Alpha and as such has bugs and that the pack "needs to be tested" by the Civilization community. The mod comes with the following warning.

WARNING : The giant map is already way above the size of the huge map, it may or may not load on your PC (and will take some time to do so), the Ludicrous map is the max map size before the game refuse to load, and will take more than 4-5 minutes to load (or crash). I'd suggest to lower the textures size in the video option, the game use almost all the 6GB of VRAM of my GPU.

I'm not releasing this mod blindly, the Ludicrous size has been tested on a 500 turns game in autoplay with 32 civs without crash on my computer (CPU : i7 4770K, RAM: 16GB, GPU : GTX 980 ti), but I have no idea of the minimal configuration for this.

Some data from this test (continent, standard time):
- total time to reach turn 240 : 03h30, 1 turn takes ~2mn at this point
- total time to reach turn 475 : 14h30, 1 turn takes ~4mn at this point

known bug: Culturally Linked Location fail when too many Civilization are placed (still work at ~30)

Installation instructions for Gedemon's Civilization VI map pack is available on the Civ Fanatics Forum here.

Please note that this map pack requires a very high-end system in order to run properly, though even then the game will take a long time to calculate AI turns. On Gedemon's system with an i7 4770K and a GTX 980Ti the time between turns could be over two minutes in the mid-game, which means that this mod is going to put an extremely heavy load on your system.

This is where DX12 would help. Better use of the CPU cores/threads would really help those turn times and especially late game.Quote

Yeah, DirectX 12 would help here it acted anything like Mantle with Beyond Earth.

The main problem is that Firaxis has went silent when ti comes to DirectX 12 since their original announcement.Quote

Indeed they have. Just leaves us with pure speculation. Either they are having a hard time with it or they are really trying to polish it. Kinda feel like it's either extreme.Quote

I really enjoyed the Earth map in Civ 5 so I am sad that they seemingly removed it in Civ 6 but at least we have this now.Quote

I kinda feel like they left out a lot of customization for games. Not many options, although the next patch is supposed to bring it back. Rumored they took it out because they were having a lot of bugs and issues. So good on them for thatQuote
