Google brings 4K HDR content to Play Movies

Google has officially brought HDR content to their Play Movies store

Back in December 2016, Google released 4K content to their content library and since then the company has built up a large selection of high-resolution media but until now HDR videos have been absent from the Google Play Store.

Google has now expanded into HDR content, allowing users to stream HDR movies to compatible devices, be it a smart TV or an HDR display that is connected to Google's Chromecast Ultra streaming unit. Right now this functionality is only available to users in the US and Canada, though it will roll out to other nations at a later date.

Those who already own 4K films will be able to access its HDR version if available, so owners to 4K content on the Play Store can rest assured that they will not be charged any extra for HDR content, at least when compared to versions that are the same resolution.

To find HDR content on the Google Play Movies Store, users will need to simply search "HDR" into their search box. Right now 4K HDR versions of Mad Max: Fury Road, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Batman V Superman and The Lego Movie are available.

Right now HDR compliant devices that will directly support HDR in-app playback are rare, making the Google Chromecast Ultra the best solution for Steaming Google HDR content, at least until current generation TVs and apps are updated with in-app HDR support.
