Epic Games Acquires Houseparty Video Chat App

Houseparty, the video chat app and social platform, has been acquired by Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite and the Unreal Engine. This comes little more than a month after Epic Games’ purchase of Psyonix, the creators of Rocket League.

While Epic Games has not revealed much about the acquisition, such as Houseparty’s purchase price, it has been confirmed that Houseparty accounts will remain separate from Epic Games accounts and that user data will not be shared across the two apps.

Houseparty’s CEO, Sima Sistani has stated that Houseparty and Epic Games has a “common vision to make human interaction easier and more enjoyable” while Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney has stated that “By teaming up, we can build even more fun, shared experiences than what could be achieved alone.”

The addition of Houseparty into the Epic Games family will grant the company some much-needed expertise when it comes to creating more socially focused features for their Epic Games Store platform. Moving forward, the integration of Houseparty’s technology into the Epic Games client seems likely, especially as the company attempts to compete with Steam in terms of features.
