Intel plans on releasing CPUs with up to 18 cores on their X299 CPU platform, offering almost 2x the core/thread count of their last generation Broadwell-E flagship the i7 6950K while also offering faster Turbo boost 3.0 clock speeds.

This CPU will act as Intel's answer to AMD's Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, offering faster turbo clock speeds/maximum single-threaded performance and a higher core count than AMD's flagship. The downside here is that Intel's offering comes with a significantly higher price, though this extra cost could be worthwhile depending on your use case.

Now some early benchmarks have been leaked for Intel's i9 7980XE, showcasing some high levels of both single-threaded and multi-threaded CPU performance. These benchmarks come from Coolenjoy, with the CPU being used on an ASUS X299 Apex motherboard and with quad-channel memory that appears to be running at 3600MHz. Coolenjoy's benchmark data can be viewed here

The specifications of Intel's whole X299 CPU lineup is listed below, alongside the expected UK pricing for each CPU.

When using certain benchmarks Coolenjoy found that the CPU was running with all-core clock speeds of 4.2GHz, which is likely due to customised clock speed profiles that are used by ASUS' X299 Apex motherboard.

This means that in many of these test that Intel's CPU is running at clock speeds that are ahead of Intel's listed "stock clock speeds", though this is due to motherboard characteristics rather than traditional/custom overclocking. This results in benchmark results that are higher than they should be. In these tests, the only bios option that has been changed is XMP options to run the system's memory at its rated speeds.

Hmm looks very nice - good clock speeds across 18/36 but... SWEET JESUS IT'S £1800!Quote

cinebench .... 4200 vs. 3050 (OC 3450) points.

price in germany (mindfactory) : i9-7960XE = 2300€ vs. 1950x = 960€.

euro price per CB point:

intel = 0,547 cent
AMD = 0,314 cent
AMD = 0,278 cent (OC)Quote

The 14 core seems to be the sweet spot here for single + multi threaded on the high end.Quote

This, granted that it gives insane scores but the price? You can buy a 1950X, Motherboard and RAM for the price of that CPU alone!Quote
