Back in 1997, a unique version of DOOM released on Nintendo 64. At the time of writing, this game hasn't been re-released on any other platform, including Nintendo's future consoles. As it stands, DOOM fans cannot access this series entry without access to an N64 console or an emulator, but that might be about to change.

PEGI, the Pan European Game Information Rating board has reportedly rated DOOM 64 for both PS4 and PC, granting the game a 16+ age rating. This was first spotted by Gematsu, who also reports that the PEGI ratings for DOOM and DOOM II, which released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch yesterday, were only rated for PC and PS4 by PEGI, despite the fact they released on other platforms. With this in mind, it looks like DOOM 64 will be re-released on all major platforms in the near future.

At this time it is unknown when DOOM 64 will release on modern gaming platforms, or in what form the game will be released. Will the title be a Unity Engine remake, or will gamers receive a port of the 1997 original. Your guess is as good as mine.

DOOM 64 is considered by many fans of the franchise to be amongst the best the series has to offer, but ultimately the game was less successful than other console iterations of the franchise, mostly thanks to the overwhelming popularity of consoles like the Sony PlayStation during that era.
