Bethesda Creation Club - The Return of Paid Mods?

Bethesda has announced the creation of their new Creation Club, which has been set up to create more content for both Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition.
This new system is paid mods in everything but name, though the system is a huge improvement over their previous attempts at creating a paid mods system. Firstly, all mods/content that is sold through this system is fully curated by Bethesda and must pass their compatibility and quality assurance testing and secondly all content in this new Creation Club must be original, so existing free mods will not suddenly carry a hefty price tag.
Mods/creations in this system are paid for using Bethesda credits inside each game's in-game digital marketplace. Credits can be purchased from PSN, Xbox Live or Steam.

Creation Club is a collection of all-new content for both Fallout 4 and Skyrim. It features new items, abilities, and gameplay created by Bethesda Games Studios and outside development partners including the best community creators. Creation Club content is fully curated and compatible with the main game and official add-ons.

This new system will launch in the summer, coming with several different varieties of new content. Note however that content can be created outside of these basic categories.

  • - New weapons, material skins, parts, etc.
  • - APPAREL: New outfits, armour, and items for your character.
  • - WORLD: New locations, decorations, foliage, etc.
  • - CHARACTERS: New abilities, characters, companions, etc.
  • - CREATURES: New enemies, mounts, pets, etc.
  • - GAMEPLAY: New types of gameplay like survival mode, etc.

Creators who are interested in this new system can apply to become a Bethesda Creation Club Developer here, with Bethesda accepting applications from game developers and existing Skyrim/Fallout 4 modders.

Those who are accepted as creators by Bethesda and have an accepted development pitch will start getting paid for their work as they reach each development milestone, though at this time exact details on Bethesda's payment model are unknown.

Thankfully, Bethesda's Creation Club is not the end of free modding, with strict policies preventing existing free mods from becoming Creation Club content and a heavy level of curation/oversight that will no doubt deter a lot of modders from the program.
