While developing their RTX 30 series of Ampere graphics cards, Nvidia created their new 12-pin GPU power connector. This new connection allows Nvidia to replace several 6+2-pin PCIe power cables with a single, smaller power input.

Corsair has gone on record as saying that they recommend nothing smaller than an 850W power supply for RTX 3090 users, and the company has confirmed that they are creating a direct-to-PSU 12-pin GPU power connector for use with their modular power supplies.

Nvidia plans to release all 12-pin Ampere graphics cards with 8-pin to 12-pin adaptors, but these cables are clunky, ugly and add more resistance into adapted systems. This adaptor converts two dedicated 6+2-pin PCIe power connections to create a single 12-pin connector. Thankfully, Corsair has plans to do away with these ugly adapters by creating a "thoroughly tested" "elegant cable" which will allow users to power 12-pin graphics cards using a direct PSU power connection.

These cables will be compatible with all Type 3 and Type 4 Corsair power supplies Corsair plans to release these cables by the time RTX 30 series graphics cards become available. Direct power supply connectors are more efficient than using cable adapters, look cleaner within systems and are a lot simpler to use. Future power supplies are likely to adopt Nvidia's 12-pin GPU power standard, though for now, PC builders may have to make do with adaptors and manufacturer-specific modular cable kits.
