Virgin Media Invest 3 Billion pound in UK Broadband

Virgin Media, one of the UK's largest Ultra-fast Fibre internet providers, will be investing £3 billion pounds in the UK's broadband infrastructure, which will bring fibre broadband with speeds of up to 152Mb/s to 4 million more UK homes and businesses.

This investment will be part of Virgin Media's "Project Lightning", which will bring 6000 new jobs in the UK over the next 5 years and is estimated to benefit the UK economy by £8 billion.

Virgin Media Invest 3 Billion pound in UK Broadband

This is a quote from Virgin Media's press release.

"With the support of parent company Liberty Global plc (“Liberty Global”) (Nasdaq: LBTYA, LBTYB, LBTYK), Virgin Media will extend its unrivalled fibre-rich network to approximately four million additional premises over the next five years. This will increase the number of homes and businesses to which Virgin Media can offer services by almost a third; from around half of the country today to nearly 17 million premises by 2020."

Liberty Global, Virgin Media's parent company,  is also preparing trials of DOCSIS 3.1 technology across several European locations later this year. This technology could give us speeds of up to 10Gb in the future.

It is fantastic to see further investment in the UK's fibre broadband infrastructure, especially from a internet provider which supports the Broadband Stakeholder Group's (BSG) voluntary code to support the "open internet", which is the UK's form of Net Neutrality.
