Sony's reportedly planning to replace current PS5 models with a new detachable disk drive model

In Mid-2023, Sony's reportedly planning to replace their existing PlayStation 5 models with a new model that will feature a detachable disk drive, making all new PS5 consoles diskless systems that have a disk drive upgrade option. This change will allow Sony to lower production costs by moving manufacturing towards a single SKU, while also giving new PS5 owners to upgrade their systems with a disk drive whenever they want.

Tom Henderson, the owner of Insider Gaming, has stated that test kits for Sony's new detachable disk drive PlayStation 5 consoles are in the hands of testers that the new system "works flawlessly". Additionally, Sony are also expected to talk about their new PlayStation 5 model officially soon.

With Sony's new PlayStation 5 console design, a PS5 disk drive will become an optional extra that can be attached to new PS5 consoles. This move will make all new PlayStation 5 consoles diskless out of the box, and will likely increase Sony's digital game sales. That said, their disk drive optional extra will allow new PS5 owners to upgrade their systems with relative ease, allowing them to play new disk-based games and legacy disk-based PS4 titles.

This is a little ambiguous, does this mean Sony are releasing a new console and blu-ray drive, or a new blu-ray drive, or a new USB NVMe?Quote
