Samsung Delays Galaxy Fold Smartphone Launch

Samsung has confirmed that they have postponed the launch of their flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, to thoroughly investigate the reports of broken screens amongst reviewers and conduct further internal tests on the handset.

Earlier this month, several phone reviewers reported that their Galaxy Fold devices broke within days of usage, sparking reliability concerns for Samsung's newest smartphone, which isn't a good look for Samsung given the Fold's £1,800 price tag.

At this time, it is unknown when the Galaxy Fold will release, though Samsung is aiming to launch the Fold product within the "coming weeks". All launch events for the Galaxy Fold have been cancelled or delayed, including high-profile events in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Previously, the Galaxy Fold was due to launch in the US on April 26th and in the UK on May 3rd. Samsung is currently investigating what went wrong with their early review units, though it is worth noting that some reviewers did try to remove a protective layer from their handset's folding screen, which damaged the device.

Samsung Delays Galaxy Fold Smartphone Launch

While the Galaxy Fold was never intended to be a mass market smartphone, Samsung's delay has enabled its rivals to catch up on Samsung in the world of folding smartphone displays. Both Huawei and Xiaomi have plans to release folding smartphones, but neither brand has confirmed their release plans. Even so, Samsung's delay lessens their head start on their rivals and will no doubt leave Galaxy Fold fans concerned about the device's reliability for quite some time.
