GAME acquires Multiplay for £20m

The UK games retailer GAME has acquired the gaming services and events company Multiplay for 20 million pounds. GAME says the move will help expand its community events and eSports program, as well as increase its digital PC games footprint.

As many of our UK based readers already know Multiplay is an organisation which organises a variety of gaming events in the UK. The most notable of these events is undoubtedly Insomnia, a Consumer event which competitive gaming, a retail expo and gathers together many of big-name YouTubers, including our very own TinyTomLogan. Last year the event was attended by over 67 thousand people.

GAME acquires Multiplay for 20 million pounds

here is what GAME's CEO had to say about the companies acquisition;

“The acquisition of Multiplay is an exciting and strategically important step for GAME,” “The world of live events, eSports and multiplayer gaming is growing rapidly and one we have been looking to enter for some time."

“By acquiring Multiplay we are benefitting from nearly two decades of experience, during which time Multiplay has built an exceptional reputation and leading position in its markets. Multiplay has a great management team and a fantastic culture – their passion and enthusiasm for games is infectious. Like Multiplay, our communities are at the heart of our business, and together we will be able to move even faster to grow and develop our services for both gamers and suppliers in the UK, Spain and around the world.”

Multiplay's CEOCraig Fletcher will remain in charge of Multiplay and does not expect to need to lay off any jobs from the company as a result of the acquisition. Here is what he had to say about it;

 “GAME and Multiplay are both passionate about games and gaming, building valuable communities of gamers and putting customers first. Over the years we’ve worked closely with the GAME team on many occasions and come to know them well.

“Our businesses are culturally aligned and I am looking forward to joining and working with Martyn and the team. Being part of GAME means that together we can offer our communities so much more than we ever could have independently and can more rapidly realise our growth aspirations.”

In recent years GAME has had it's ups and downs, being hit hard by the recent recession but seeing a good recovery. GAME expect's to see diminishing margins on products and to have lower profits than was expected for this year.

Let's hope that GAME's acquisition of Multiplay will make the company work harder on PC gaming, as at present GAME's retail presence sorely lacks a good selection of PC games or accessories. Let's also hope that Multiplay will also be able to make it's future events bigger and better thanks to the financial backing of GAME, one of the UK's largest Game retailers.

The money must be entirely in the events though, they could bring their respective assets together to form something rather good. But then again they could squeeze out the other sponsors, try to make a 'GAME' festival and accelerate their own death.
