ASUS' RT-AX88U becomes one of the world's first Wi-Fi 6 certified routers

Internet connectivity is a big deal in the modern age, and devices need to constantly compete for the best WiFi coverage. WiFi 6 (802.11ax) promises up to a 2.3x increase in speed over WiFi 5 (802.11ac), but its main aim is to deliver 4x more capacity than WiFi 5. In addition to this, WiFi 6 is said to consume less power from compatible mobile devices.

With Amazon Alexa, Google Chromecases, mobile phones and smart TVs littering modern homes, the need for strong routers has never been greater. Even in the PC market, WiFi 6 is becoming a common feature on new motherboards and WiFi-enabled systems. WiFi 6 may be new to the market, but it's quickly becoming mainstream.

ASUS has confirmed that its RT-AX88U router has been officially certified by the WiFi Alliance as being WiFi 6 complaint. This was due to ASUS passing the Alliance's rigorous test suite, which amongst other things ensured that ASUS' router passed assessments for WPA3 and OFDMA-related transmission. The certification process also verified that the RT-AX88U was compliant with the latest WPA3 security protocol and Wi-Fi Agile Multiband.

The ASUS RT-AX88U is already available at retailers and is said to deliver a maximum data transfer rate of 1,148Mbps over 2GHz networks and transfer rates of 4,804Mbps over 5GHz. On Amazon UK, this router is currently available for £260.82 and is compatible with ASUS' AiMesh WiFi system.
