Self-driving cars bring with them a wide range of new challenges for the tech industry, not only to provide hardware and software that is capable of completing the task safely but also to create equipment that can withstand the range of temperatures and longevity expected from a modern road vehicle.

Samsung has started manufacturing their latest 10nm LPDDR4X memory, providing the industry with Automotive Grade-1 compliant LPDDR4X memory which can withstand temperatures of between -40 and 125 degrees Celsius. This thermal endurance will be vital for use in vehicles, which are expected to operate in extreme thermal conditions.

LPDDR4X memory is designed to offer lower levels of power consumption than standard LPDDR4, decreasing the memory’s I/O voltage to provide 18-20% lower power consumption. With Samsung’s Automotive-grade LPDDR4X memory, the company can hit processing speeds of 4,266 Mbps, a 14% increase from the company’s last-generation 20nm class LPDDR4 DRAM, which itself consumed 30% more power.

Moving forward, Samsung plans to bolster their technology partnerships with automotive partners and creators of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). Below is a comment from Samsung’s senior vice president of memory marketing, Sewon Chun.

The 16Gb LPDDR4X DRAM is our most advanced automotive solution yet, offering global automakers outstanding reliability, endurance, speed, capacity and energy efficiency,

Samsung will continue to closely collaborate with manufacturers developing diverse automotive systems, in delivering premium memory solutions anywhere.

Samsung’s increased thermal endurance, lower power consumption and enhanced performance levels will help to provide automotive customers with the bandwidth that their self-driving systems require while delivering the endurance necessary to operate in even the harshest environmental conditions.

The low-power nature of LPDDR4X will also help vehicles save power, though this factor is of minimal consequence given how little power DRAM will consume on a fully electric self-driving car.
