Corsair Dominator DDR4 Memory Kits
New version of some of the most prestigious RAM around!

We recently took a look at GSkill’s Ripjaws IV DDR4 memory kit with speeds of up to 3000MHz and were excited looking to the future for more kits at potentially higher speeds than we’ve ever seen before. Although 3000MHz is certainly insanely fast when it comes to memory, we have seen speeds up to this with DDR3, and so while it not being hugely staggering on release, it does show what we can hope to expect in the future if speeds of around 3000MHz are only the starting point for DDR4.
Today, we’re taking a look at Corsair’s much loved Dominator Platinum memory, this time in DDR4. We’ve got the 2800MHz kit, but it does also come in 2666MHz at the moment. We’re confident that far more kits of a higher speed will come out soon in the Dominator Platinum range when the X99 and other compatible DDR4 motherboards and processors hit the shelves.
The DDR3 variant of the Dominator Platinum is regarded by many as some of the best quality, and most prestigious memory money can buy. Dominator Platinum memory actually changed the way many of us thought about RAM. Before, it was often the case of buying one of the cheapest kits to save money and then being able to spend the money saved on other areas. However, many enthusiasts were willing to spend the extra money in order to own a great looking and flashy bit of kit in their system. We’re confident this is going to be a similar story with DDR4.
The kit itself employs all black PCBs with some of the highest quality memory chips available. This allows the memory to be at 2800MHz with only 1.2v. To put this in perspective, the 2800MHz DDR3 kit was at 1.65v and we do think this really shows the differences between DDR3 and DDR4. We knew a lower voltage was always going to be key in the newer technology, but we never expected a decrease quite like this.
In terms of aesthetics, the Dominator Platinums look exactly the same as the DDR3 version, but in no means is that a bad point since we adored the previous model. There’s a black heatsink over the memory chips, with a metal bar over the top of it. Under the steel bar, there are white LEDs which do look great from the right angle; although in a standard system it can be difficult to see from above. However, there is an optional ‘light bar’ kit available, which replaces the standard metal bars for bars with holes in which allows the light to shine through.
When it comes to price, Dominator Platinums have always been known for their up-market pricing in order to reflect the quality and the prestige of the product. Currently, the 2800MHz 16GB kit is available for just shy of £400, with the 2666MHz kit available for £330. Since there’s very little around currently for DDR4 memory, especially as there aren’t even compatible motherboards currently out yet; we do expect prices to fall when the market becomes more competitive.
Thanks to Corsair for sending in the memory. You can discuss the Dominator Platinum DDR4 Memory Kits on the forums.
