Valve starts cancelling £4 Steam Controller sales after taking too many orders

Last week, Valve confirmed that its Steam Controller was being discontinued, discounting its remaining stock by 90% to rid itself of its remaining gamepads.

Now, we know that Valve has sold too many Steam Controllers, leading to the company issuing refunds to some buyers. Those who have received refunds should already have been informed via email.   

During Steam's Autumn Sale, Valve sold its unique gamepad design for £4 in the UK and $5 in the US, making the device cheaper than its postage costs. Valve wanted rid of its remaining gamepad stocks, and it looks like the company has achieved that and more.

Valve has confirmed that they have created their last batch of Steam controllers, making now the last time where new Steam controllers will be purchasable. This means that Valve cannot create more Steam Controllers to meet the demands of Steam's Autumn Sale. Even if they did, Valve would be creating these controllers at a loss. 

The Steam Controller was designed to ship alongside Valve' failed series of Linux-based Steam Machine systems, which left the gamepad with lower than expected adoption rates. That said, while the controller wasn't immensely popular, it will be missed by its active fanbase, who continues to make Steam Controller profiles for new games to this day.

Purchasers of Valve's Steam Controller who have not been notified of an order cancellation should still receive a gamepad as planned. However, Valve has stated that purchasers should expect longer than usual delivery times.
