Valve brings SteamVR to the Unity Platform

Valve and Unity Technologies have announced a new collaboration to offer native support for SteamVR on the Unity Platform, bringing better functionality, performance and several benefits to VR developers.

This partnership will bring extra tools for the unity platform and rendering plug-ins that should help improve performance for games created for SteamVR. Gabe Newell, Valve Co-founder made a special video address to the Vision VR/AR Summit, saying this;

      We made many of our Vive demos using Unity, and continue to use it today in VR development. Through that process, and in working with VR developers, we found some opportunities to make Unity even more robust and powerful for us and really want to share those benefits with all VR content creators

At the Vision Summit Valve gave every developer at the conference a Free HTC Vive Pre Headset, the latest iteration of the SteamVR development kit.

Unity is used by almost one third of game developers and has been used to create many great titles like Cities: Skylines, Kerbal Space Program, Monument Valley, Endless Legend and an almost countless number of other titles.

Hopefully that means better VR support through steam itself, having it recognize a VR display is connected and auto configurates itself for a game that supports it. Just a thoughtQuote
