The Witcher 3 sells over 6 million copies

CD Projekt has just announced that The Witcher 3 has sold over 6 million copies across all platforms within the first 6 weeks of release, making the game easily one of the most popular titles of this year. This has resulted in CD Projekt Red making record setting revenue and profits.

The Witcher 3 is a tremendously popular game for very good reasons, the PC port is very good, the game plays very well, the story was great and CD Project kept giving us free DLC week after week in order to make us keep on playing. The Witcher 3 is a game which all  developers should look up to, setting a new standard for what we should expect from a high budget AAA release.

Below is an open letter from CD Project's studio head Adam Badowski, which is also available on The Witcher's main website

Hey Gamers!
Time does fly! These few months since launch passed faster than you can say potestaquisitor. We’ve been hard at work delivering you new content, fixing what needed to be fixed, and secretly plotting how to rock this boat we call the RPG genre even more. We’ve just concluded our shareholder conference where we announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt family got a bit bigger -- we sold over 6 million copies of the game in six weeks since launch. Worry not, I won’t discuss any financial stuff here. I would, however, like to give you some insight on what that means to us as game creators.
One could think we have six million reasons to be happy and that’s it. We do, but that number is also a big responsibility and I want everyone to know that we, as a studio, realize that. For us, all your high praise, all the positive reviews, are also an obligation -- we’ve made a really good game but there’s still a long road ahead of us. Everyone here in CD PROJEKT RED is really attached to their work and how you, the gamers, perceive it. RED is full of artists, wild dreamers and people crazy about what they do (and sometimes just plain crazy). We lose sleep over that particular colour the sun has when it sets over Velen, and argue over arranging the furniture in a house the majority of gamers will probably never see. We’re not the kind of people who are easily satisfied and we always strive for more. I’d like you to know that.
Yes, six million copies is a great achievement for a company making RPGs, but this business is not only about that. If our games are a gallery of sound, picture and text - you are the visitors of this gallery. To an artist, there’s no sweeter sight than people enjoying their work. That’s why, in the name of all the devs in the studio, I’d like to say thanks to each and every one of you.
Adam Badowski,
Head of Studio

One other thing to note here is that the Witcher 3 has done a lot to bring CD Projekt's sister company GOG, formerly Good Old Games, on the map, with over 1 million copies being activated on the platform. This has also made adoption of their new GOG Galaxy client a lot higher than was originally anticipated by the developer, which is a fantastic thing for the company.

Hopefully developers will learn from the Witcher 3's success, showing others that you do not need to use greedy tactics like Pre-order DLC and other similar tactics in order to ensure sales.

Still playing it now on Game+, GoG should see an improvement over the next couple of months especially with Bethedasoft Works now releasing titles to them and talks have begun with Eidos Interactive so we should see Just Cause III available around release time.Quote

Just started playing Witcher3, first venture into the series. I was skeptical since before I kind of lumped it into the AAA overhyped world, but wow totally wrong. Really draws you in right from the get-go.Quote

Still need to complete The Witcher 1+2, Fallout 3+NV, Watch_Dogs, Most of the AC games, FC3+4, Both Metro games, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Thief, Dishonored and quite a few more.

Basically I got a metric butt ton of gaming to get through Quote
