The Dolphin Emulator now has Vulkan Support

The latest version of the Dolphin Emulator now has support for the Vulkan API, offering significant performance improvements over the existing OpenGL version. This will mean that users of the Dolphin emulator on Linux will have some significant performance improvements when using the new API, especially when running AMD GPUs.

This comes not long after the Dolphin Emulator was updated to become able to boot all Gamecube games, which is a significant goal given the project's goal to accurately emulate Wii/Gamecube hardware.

The developers of the Dolphin Emulator have plans on conducting a detailed performance evaluation of their new Vulkan backend, so hopefully we will soon be able to accurately judge just how much of a performance improvement this new API offers. Will the Dolphin Emulator run better with DirectX 12 or Vulkan? Hopefully we will soon find out.

Emulation is a tricky task and one that has always been a legal grey area, but it is nonetheless fascinating to see how these complex pieces of software develop over time and to see popular console releases play at higher resolutions on modern displays.
