Sony is releasing a new version of their PSVR Headset

Sony has announced that they are creating a new version of the PSVR HMD (Head Mounted Display), which will release with the model number CUH-ZVR2 and come with redesigned elements and some new features.

The main specifications of the headset, such as screen resolution and refresh rate, are expected to be unchanged with this new model, with Sony offering full compatibility with all existing PSVR titles. Expect this version to be more of a PSVR refresh, rather than PSVR2.

The main two differences between these two units are their updated cabling and the ability to use HDR pass-through on Sony’s new PSVR processing unit. Cables will be thinner and more streamlined while Sony’s updated processing unit will be capable of delivering HDR images to the user’s TV when PSVR is turned off.

With today’s PSVR headsets, users of HDR TVs need to move their HDMI cables from their PSVR processor box to the HDR TV directly to support HDR, which is an obvious downside that Sony wishes to address with this new revision.

A hardware update to PlayStation VR is being prepared. The new version, model number CUH-ZVR2, features an updated design that enables the stereo headphone cables to be integrated with the VR headset and a slimmer, streamlined connection cable. There’s also an updated Processor Unit that supports HDR pass through, enabling users to enjoy HDR-compatible PS4 content on a TV without having to disconnect the Processor Unit in between the TV and the PS4 system. This function can be used only when the VR headset is turned off.

Sony has stated that PSVR’s bundle pricing will not change with the release of the new headset revision, which means that new buyers will need to be careful to ensure that they get this newer model when it launches. Sony will have use different packaging for their new PSVR headsets.

We will share details on the launch timing in North America at a later date. The pricing of the PS VR bundles will remain the same.

At this time Sony has not released any images of their new PSVR headset, though it is expected to offer the same basic design and specifications. As we have said before, this is more of a product refresh than a whole new PSVR headset.
