Plextor M8Pe M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD to debut at CES

When we reviewed the Plextor M6e PCIe/M.2 SSD back in 2014 we hailed it as being one of the fastest SSDs of it's time, easily beating out any SATA SSD and being able to be used through PCIe or through the new M.2 interface.

Now with NVMe standard arriving and the M.2 form factor becoming more common on new motherboards we have really been looking forward to seeing Plextor and other SSD manufacturers bring to market faster and faster SSDs, revolutionizing the way enthusiasts look at storage.

Now we have finally spotted movement on the NVMe SSD front form companies other than Intel and Samsung, with Plextor teasing their soon to be announced M8e M.2 SSD which can also be used with a PCIe adapter for older systems. This SSD will offer speeds that slaughter standard SATA SSDs with 4 kilobyte random reads up to 270,000 Input/Output operations per second (IOPS), and 4KB write up to 150,000 IOPS.

This SSD will be blazing fast, though right now we do not know how well it will compete with existing NVMe SSDs from Samsung and Intel.

One of my predictions for 2016 is that this will be the year that NVMe SSDs becomes much more common and affordable, making these amazing SSD speeds accessible to a larger portion of PC builders.

Quite fond of Plextor stuff, use to only use their optical drives (even though they had a heavy premium over others years and years ago), always good to see them. Quote
