Oculus showcases their "Santa Cruz" wireless VR headset

At Oculus Connect 3 the company showed off their newest VR prototype for a standalone VR headset codenamed "Santa Cruz".  This new VR headset will be standalone, requiring no connected PC in order to function.
To be clear, this is not a next generation Oculus Rift with tetherless play functions, and it is an entirely different device which will sit between the GearVR and the Oculus Rift to provide a mid-range VR experience without tethers and with fully integrated tracking.
This headset uses a front mounted camera and uses it to control the headsets positional tracking, allowing this headset to offer a fully integrated experience without any additional setup other than simply placing the headset on your head.

Today we unveiled the Santa Cruz feature prototype, an all-in-one VR device. We’ve made a ton of progress on the software for inside-out tracking that makes this whole category possible.

While I would have personally preferred to see a wireless version of the Oculus Rift, this Santa Cruz prototype is no doubt impressive, giving a mid-high end VR experience without the need for an expensive smartphone or the need to own a high-end PC and an expensive external tracking setup.

This VR headset will not be appealing to high-end VR gamers, though it will take an important step towards making VR mainstream, hopefully coming at a much more affordable price than the Oculus Rift.
