Nvidia Sheild Tablet - everything you need to know!

After Nvidia's major leak regarding the Shield Tablet, I personally though there wouldn't be much worth writing about when it was officially revealed. But here is the, now official, low-down on Nvidia's new shield Tablet.

In the UK the Shield Tablet will retail for £239.99 for the 16GB WIFI version and £299.99 for the 32GB WIFI & LTE version. Pricing for US and EU are $299, $399 and  €299 and €379 respectively.

The Controller will cost £49.99, $59 and €59.99 depending on your region.

The Cover/ Stand will cost, £24.99 ,$39 and €29.99 depending on your region.

Nvidia's Shield tablet will release on the 29th of July in the US and Canada, with a later European release on August 14th.

Spec wise nothing has changed from the leaked slides, we still have the same Tegra K1 SOC (a 192 core Keplar GPU with a Quad core A15 CPU), the same 8" 1080p IPS display, Bluetooth 4.0, a 5MP front facing camera, front facing stereo speakers and Direct Stylus 2.

Now we can add 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz WIFI support, Micro SD storage expansion, GPS, 5MP rear camera and even a Micro SIM card slot.

Full specs and cellular network bands can be found in the pictures below.

Nvidia Controller

Many of you will be thinking that the Nvidia controller is nothing special, just a mere Playstation or Xbox Rip-off, but you are wrong. Aside from typical controller buttons ther are buttons specifically designed to ease the Shield Tablet Experience. These include volume controls, Android navigation buttons, a touch pad and even voice controls.

Nvidia also gloat that compared to typical wireless controllers that they have half the latency and an over 6x lead when it comes to Data rate.

Every Shield Tab will also be able to connect to up to four controllers simultaneously, making multi-player or party gaming a simple task.

Other things to note

The Shield is the first Gamecasting Tablet, with full Twitter functionality with Nvidia's Shadowplay. Here you can even use the Front facing 5MP camera to record your own reactions to your gameplay to add directly to the stream.

The Shield Tablet is also for artistic users too, with a GPU accelerated stylus your actions are recorded on the screen almost flawlessly and its high quality IPS screen ensures that your colour work is top notch.

Tegra K1 Specific Games

While we can say that adding essentially a Keplar GPU to a otherwise ordinary ARM SoC is impressive, we cannot confirm it's performance prowess until launch, when reviewers will get a chance to benchmark and compare it to the offerings from the likes of Qualcomm and other manufacturers of ARM chips.

Nvidia claim that the Tegra K1 SoC offers a huge jump in graphics performance for a portable device. And NVIDIA is working developers to push the envelope on quality for Android games and by integrating full OpenGL support. With the Tegra K1 launch NVIDIA will have 11 Tegra K1 games; titles that utilize technology that only the K1 offers. These include:

  • War Thunder
  • The Talos Principle
  • Trine 2
  • Pure Chess
  • Half-Life 2 (OpenGL, not just OpenGL ES)
  • Portal (OpenGL, not just OpenGL ES)
  • Anomaly 2
  • ... and more

In closing the Shield Tablet is an interesting device, not just a mere tablet but a chance to being PC gaming to the living room, or anywhere at home with internet access. As a Tablet it looks like a solid performer, which with the investment of an extra £50 becomes a portal to our loved PC games.
