One of the key cornerstones fo the Vulkan API is its usability across multiple platforms. Making recent news stories regarding the API's Multi-GPU functionality being limited to Windows 10 a huge issue for fans of the API. 
 
At GDC 2017, Kronos spoke for the first time about multi-GPU support on Vulkan, several times mentioning the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM), causing a lot of confusion amongst the gaming press and developers alike. These statements suggested that Multi-GPU functionality would be limited to Windows 10 only, which is something that Kronos never intended. 
 
Khronos has now confirmed that the use of WDDM is not required for Multi-GPU functionality, though that the LDA (Link Display Adapter) mode for Windows will make implementing Multi-GPU support on Windows much easier. 
 
 

Some of the Khronos GDC presentations mentioned that for Vulkan multi-GPU functionality, Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) must be in Linked Display Adapter (LDA) mode. That was not a very clear statement that has caused some confusion. And so it is worth clarifying that:

  1. 1. The use of WDDM is referring to the use of Vulkan multi-GPU functionality on Windows. On other OS, WDDM is not necessary to implement the Vulkan multi-GPU extension.
  2. 2. On Windows, the use of LDA mode can make implementing Vulkan multi-GPU functionality easier, and will probably be used by most implementations, but it is not strictly necessary.
  3. 3. If an implementation on Windows does decide to use LDA mode, it is NOT tied to Windows 10. LDA mode has been available on many versions of Windows, including Windows 7 and 8.X.

Khronos always strives to make its specifications as cross-platform as possible. Of course, what products ship on which OS is up to the implementers of each specification, but Khronos is already aware of vendor plans to ship multi-GPU functionality on platforms other than Windows 10, including Linux.

To be clear Multi-GPU support is not tied to Windows but will be available across a range of operating systems, though support for Multi-GPU and which OS' it runs on will be defined by game developers and their specific software implementations.

Its amazing how that mikerosh1t bigged up dx 12 and now its here its a pile of dog turd that developers can't be bothered with.
