HTC hints at a Gen 2 Vive VR headset reveal at CES 2017

An HTC executive has hinted that a Generation 2 HTC Vive VR headset will be revealed at CES 2017, though at this time it is unknown what hardware upgrades or changes will be made to the headset.

Right now we already know that a second generation version of Valve's lighthouse tracking system has been developed for the HTC Vive, reducing the component count for the SteamVR headset from 41 to 9, which will reduce the price and the complexity of the headset.

In total when the second generation tracking system is applied to both the HTC Vive headset itself and its motion controllers a total of 2560 component placements are removed, making the headset easier to produce and much more reliable.

Yesterday a reporter from Tech Crunch, Lucan Matney, tweeted that an HTC executive says that "I think CES is going to be very exciting" in response to a question about a second Generation HTC Vive, hinting that an HTC Vive is indeed on the way.

Right now it is unknown how HTC plans on improving the design of the HTC Vive, though it is likely that this new headset iteration will come with a reduced mass and with a more comfortable head mounting system.
