ASUS Teases HDMI 2.1 Monitor Reveals at CES 2021

ASUS has confirmed that they will be revealing new HDMI 2.1 compatible ROG monitors at CES 2021, screens which will be ideal for modern gaming PCs and the latest gaming consoles.

With HDMI 2.1, monitors have access to a whopping 48 Gbps of display bandwidth, allowing gamers to run access ultra-high framerates and resolutions at the same time with no major limitations. This means that we should expect to see a 4K 120Hz screen, if not a 4K 144Hz panel. 

Before now, PC displays have been suffering from a chicken/egg problem, where HDMI 2.1 products were not widely available and alternative standards like DisplayPort 1.4 were required for high refresh rate 4K connectivity. With the release of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nvidia’s RTX 30 series and AMD’s RX 6000 series, there is now a clear reason for new TVs and monitors to support HDMI 2.1 as an alternative to DisplayPort 1.4. 

HDMI 2.1 opens up many possibilities for ASUS, such as support for higher colour bitrates at 4K, VRR, higher resolutions like 5K or 265+ Hz refresh rates on 1440p screens. HDMI 2.1 offers gamers a tonne of bandwidth, and that bandwidth can be used to improve a screen’s image quality in many ways.  

In August 2020, ASUS revealed their first HDMI 2.1 certified monitors, which should ship with 27-inch, 32-inch and 43-inch screen size options. We expect to hear more about these ROG monitors soon.
